Shakeup Looming After Injury to Renteria? ML Start

DETROIT | First, the Tigers lost starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman for the season.

Now, starting shortstop Edgar Renteria can join the club.

After straining his tricep in an August 18th game against Boston, club officials announced that Renteria is expected to miss the next 5-6 weeks and will likely be out the remainer of the regular season.

"It's certainly a big blow," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "How do I replace a guy that hits like him and plays defense like he does?"

For starters, the team is expected to call up outfielder Reggie Willits, who was recently acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for prospects Yorman Bazardo and Brad Nelson. Top shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar, who is expected to get a crack at the job next year if Renteria decides not to invoke his player option, is also expected to get a call up from Triple A, even though he probably won't see action immediately.

"We obviously like the potential of Alcides, but we aren't going to rush him," said Tigers general manager T-Rez Elliott. "He'll perform in a backup role for us and add depth at the position."

Elliott also said that veteran third baseman Carlos Guillen, who has been mired in a season-long slump, will likely move back to shortstop (his position in 2006) in Renteria's absence.

"We all know that Carloss has been struggling this year," Elliott said. "But he's optimistic about the move - I think he's excited to go back to a position where he was so productive for us last year."

However, there is a possiblity that Renteria, who is hitting .301 with nine home runs and 55 RBIs, could return in time for the playoffs - if the Tigers make it.

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Leyland said. "We have to qualify first - and losing Edgar certainly doesn't help."

SISBL NEWS

TAMPA | With just over a month away from the end of the regular season, it's time for those teams who won't be making the playoffs this season to begin taking a look at what next seasons team will look like. The Tampa Bay Rays are one of those teams and for them, right now, its looks like they will have a pretty solid team next season. Most everybody on their active roster will be returning next season with the exception of a few. Players like BJ Upton, Carl Crawford, Scott Kazmir, Carlos Pena among others will all be returning next season. As of right now, the Rays will only be losing two starting players and three relievers to free agency this off-season, barring any late extensions.

Here's a quick look at the projected 2009 Opening Day Roster:
Starting Rotation
SP Scott Kazmir
SP Wade LeBlanc
SP Matt Garza
SP Jacob McGee
SP Wade Davis

Bullpen
LR Edwin Jackson
LR Andy Sonnanstine
MR Erasmo Ramirez
MR Scott Dohmann
SU Eduardo Morlan
SU Troy Percival
CL Heath Bell

Lineup
LF Carl Crawford
3B Evan Longoria
CF BJ Upton
1B Carlos Pena
RF Luke Scott
DH Chris V. Carter
C John Jaso
SS Khalil Greene
2B Willy Aybar

Bench
SS Reid Brignac
CF Fernando Perez
RF Jonny Gomes
C Dioner Navarro

That is somewhat what the 2009 Opening Day roster will look like barring any off-season trades or free agent signings. That seems to be a pretty young and solid team that will be competing in the toughest division in baseball, the AL East. As always, we wish the best of luck to the Tampa Bay Rays organization for the remainder of the season. We will see you again next week when we look back at the past season and take a look at the teams off season needs.
